Making a real difference this decade

As we head into a new decade, we, at Piggly Wiggly, have joined the movement to make things a little greener in our corner of the world.

Last year we cut out plastic straws in our coffee shop and encouraged our shops to stop using plastic bags, we buy fresh locally grown produce from local farmers which helps them grow their businesses and lessens our carbon footprint, we offer discounts on takeaways when reusable containers are used and we use solar panels throughout the centre. We are always looking at ways to make a small difference in the belief if each of us does our bit, it will make the world of difference.

Here are our top tips to help you go green:

  1. When eating out, take a reusable container with you in case of leftovers. Many restaurants still use take away containers that are harmful to the environment and take many, many years to break down. Here at Piggly Wiggly, we even reward you by giving a 5% discount on all takeaways if you bring your own reusable containers and mugs (for coffee). If you don’t already own a reusable mug, don’t worry, we sell them too!
  2. Try going meat-free at least one day a week. Meat production makes up a large portion of water usage and deforestation, and by simply cutting down on your meat consumption, you can make a big difference to global warming. In a conscious effort to cut down on our effects on global warming, we added a lot more vegetarian and vegan options to our own menu in 2019.
  3. Shop locally and support small businesses. Many of our shops are family-run, small businesses and by supporting them means, not only are you supporting the local economy, but you are also helping local families reach their goals.
  4. Take reusable bags with you when you go shopping. This will give you an immense sense satisfaction we promise!
  5. Unplug your electrical appliances at night and when you’re not at home. This prevents “phantom electrical draw” – and lowers your costs too! A win-win if you ask us!
  6. Be on the lookout for “double-duty” ideas:
  • Sprinkle your coffee grounds over acid-craving plants.
  • Use plastic containers, such as ice cream or yoghurt containers, for arts and crafts or as travel water dishes for pets.
  • Reuse glass jars for food storage or in the garage for nails or screws.
  1. Consider installing a more cost effective toilet, which has a half and full flush mechanism to save help water (and money!). Alternatively, try adding a brick to the cistern to displace the water thereby lowering the amount of water used in each flush.
  2. Hang dry clothes on the line instead of using a tumble dryer – we have great weather here in SA, let’s use it!
  3. Donate your clothing to charity or to thrift shops – we even have one at Piggly Wiggly. Contact Back On The Rack to rehome your clothes and make some money off them.
  4. If you have clothing that is not fit for donation, repurpose these into rags and cloths – they make great grease rags for the garage!
